UHL & Associates, Inc. implements water resource development and environmental assessment projects in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America for International Lending Agencies, USAID, USAID Contractors, National Governments, NGOs and Private Sector clients. These projects address a wide range of water-related issues, and have included a country-wide groundwater resource availability assessment (Afghanistan); strategic planning for water-supply development options (Botswana, where wellfields were substituted for a proposed dam-based approach based on community and environmental concerns); specialized training for local government water utilities in well design and maintenance, water meters usage and water quality sampling (Jordan, Bangladesh, Liberia); and providing practical water-supply project guidance (CRS). UHL’s assessments of groundwater availability (water security) incorporate climate change impacts and sustainability evaluations. The firm has managed large and small water resource development projects for both potable and irrigation supply in logistically and technically complex and/or difficult areas. These projects have included wild, desert and drought-stricken areas (Botswana where the project staff was 50 persons), areas with security concerns, and areas where local partnering and community assistance were vital to the successful outcomes. UHL welcomes opportunities to apply innovative and state-of-the-art groundwater exploration and development techniques. For example, in Botswana, we utilized airborne geophysics to delineate optimal areas for test drilling in an area the size of Connecticut, and introduced new drilling techniques into the country for higher well yields. The firm has provided assistance to governments and NGOs in appropriate equipment selection for drilling applications and pumping systems. For example, UHL organized the purchase and shipment of a drilling rig to a hospital in Haiti for providing water supply to the facility and nearby villages. UHL completes projects with local professional partners who can provide familiarity with the local physical and geopolitical conditions, governance, gender issues, and stakeholder concerns. We recognize and make the most of opportunities to work with and gain knowledge from local talent. Efforts to gain local knowledge such as water conditions, access to reports otherwise difficult to obtain, knowledge of data from previous field programs conducted in the area by others, water quality concerns, and local community, contractor and government contacts have proven critical to the success of projects. Conversely, UHL can impart expertise and provide training to upgrade the capacity of local governance and technical personnel on a number of levels from well/wellfield design and installation, management, monitoring, and sampling procedures, to basic hydrogeology and water exploration technologies.
